Drumroll please…. and the award for almost making me late to my 9.15 lectures all week (and the 10.15 ones too-oops) goes to…..The Hazel Wood! This book was so gripping that I had to force myself to put it down each morning and rush out. So congratulations to Melissa Albert.
This book is beautifully written. I love the dark yet light narrative of Alice as we follow her story many stories. It has a twisting plot with a fantastic pace, all tied together with string and a dash of magic. The hope, relationships and the question of who are you really? make the plot and characters truly amazing. Melissa Albert is a spinner herself but this is one book I don’t think I’d want a doorway too.
I may have not fully understand the last few bits before the ending but when you try and spin a story that wants to unravel, it will find a way in the end- can we really understand the Hinterland? I may have been confused but I felt it added to the weird web that was the Hinterland and it’s workings.
This book certainly makes every little girls dream of living in a fairy-tale come true, before immediately smashing down on it with an ton of bricks. One of the best fantasy books I’ve read in a long time. What a magical book! If you can, I would totally recommend finding a copy and reading it. Though maybe read in the evenings or you might be late for work/school/uni etc.
If you want to buy yourself a copy, you can get one here.
I wasn’t too fussed about this but this review made me want to read it! x
